Huntington Park : City to Buy Land for Center

Share

The City Council approved a resolution last week establishing its intent to acquire a 75-foot stretch of parking lot space from the Norm Slauson’s Restaurant on Slauson Avenue for expansion of an adjacent shopping center.

The council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, originally planned to acquire 121 feet from the restaurant but agreed on the compromise after the restaurant owner presented a counterproposal. The agency will also give the owner a certificate of compliance, which essentially protects the owner from any future condemnation proceedings, said Michael Martin, assistant director of community development and redevelopment. A purchase price for the property still needs to be negotiated, he said.

The extra acreage was necessary to expand Lugo Plaza, one of the largest redevelopment projects in the city, which will feature the historic Lugo Adobe house reconstructed as a restaurant.
