The General Accounting Office told Congress that grenades, ammunition and other explosives stolen from the Pentagon’s global stockpiles are increasingly being used in civilian explosions. The GAO said at a Senate Armed Services Committee task force hearing on inventory management that the Defense Department’s caches of weapons, estimated to be worth $162 billion, are so large and widespread and accounting practices are so filled with problems that it is difficult to determine the scope of the problem.
