Culver City : Arguments on Fireworks Issue

The city clerk’s office is accepting written arguments for and against a ballot measure that if passed Nov. 4 would allow fireworks sales to continue in Culver City.

City Clerk Pauline C. Dolce said the arguments are not to exceed 300 words. They must be submitted by 5 p.m. Aug. 12 to the clerk’s office in City Hall, 9770 Culver Blvd. Dolce will screen the statements and choose one for each side that will be published with sample ballots, in conformance with state election law.

Under the law, Dolce must give priority first to sponsors of the measure, second to citizen groups organized for or against the measure and third to individuals. Since the measure has no sponsors and the City Council voted to place it on the ballot, arguments submitted by council members will be given first priority, City Atty. Joseph W. Pannone said.

The ballot measure will read: “Shall an ordinance to continue the sale and use of fireworks within the city of Culver City be adopted?”

The City Council would be bound by the voters’ decision if the fireworks measure passes. If the measure fails, all five council members have pledged to vote for an ordinance prohibiting fireworks sales.

Councilmen Richard R. Brundo and Richard M. Alexander favor the measure, while members Paul A. Jacobs, Jozelle J. Smith and Mayor Paul A. Netzel oppose it.
