The use of grenade launchers in training was suspended at Camp Pendleton after a sergeant was killed and a private lost his left hand when a 40-millimeter grenade exploded during firing drills. The dead man was identified as Sgt. Frederick Nunez, 26, of Cucamonga, an instructor. The private was Jeffrey Stout, 20, of Illinois. All M-203 grenade launchers were taken out of service pending an investigation. The launcher is attached to an M-16 rifle and fires a single, high-explosive round.
