Striking Kings County sheriff’s deputies were given three days to return to work or they will lose their jobs. Assistant Administrator David Edge said letters were to be sent to the homes of the 58 strikers advising them that they must report back to work by 4 p.m. Sunday or the county will consider them to have resigned voluntarily. Edge said that Kings County personnel regulations stipulate that any employee who is absent without leave for three consecutive days is considered to have resigned voluntarily. The work action involves a dispute over wages. Deputies walked off the job July 17, then disappeared to avoid being served with a court subpoena ordering them back to work on grounds that the strike is illegal because it endangers public safety.
