A bomb exploded aboard a crowded bus in north-central Sri Lanka, killing at least 31 passengers and injuring 45 others. It was the third bombing in as many days blamed on Tamil guerrillas. Authorities said some of the victims were mourners returning to the provincial capital of Anuradhapura after attending funerals for the 32 people killed Tuesday in the explosion of a land mine near the predominantly Sinhalese village of Mamaduwa. Military officials blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam--the most militant of the Tamil separatist guerrilla groups--for both fatal bombings.
