SCHLEMMER EXHIBIT IS ON AGAIN

Share

The Oskar Schlemmer exhibition, an eagerly anticipated fall attraction which was recently canceled at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, will come to the West Coast after all. The show will be at the San Diego Museum of Art, Sept. 6 through Oct. 12.

Schlemmer, one of the most innovative 20th-Century German artists, will be represented by some 200 works, in paintings, sculptures, drawings and watercolors, as well as graphic arts, stage-set designs, costumes and masks for theater and ballet performances.

Born and trained in Stuttgart, Schlemmer spent nine years on the faculty of the famous Bauhaus art school with Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. There he taught sculpture, mural painting and stage workshops; he also choreographed and staged his “Triadic Ballet” and “Bauhaus Dances” throughout Germany.

During World War II, much of his oeuvre was destroyed by the Nazis, who considered his work subversive. One of his recurring motifs was the human form in space. In his theater pieces he used daring combinations of media which anticipated the use of multimedia happenings and performance art of recent years.

The exhibition was organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art. Its tour is supported by U.S. Fidelity and Guarantee Corp. with additional funding from the Federal Republic of Germany, the National Endowment for the Arts and Lufthansa German Airlines. Publication support was provided by the endowment and the J. Paul Getty Trust.

Since its inception in 1977, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions has sponsored an “Annual Downtown Artists Show.” In the process it has enlisted the curatorial talents of Julie Brown, Howard Fox, Al Nodal and Bill Olander. This year, the LACE exhibition committee renamed and expanded the perimeters of show. It will henceforth be known as the LACE “Annuale” and may include artists living and working anywhere within Los Angeles County.

Guest curator for this new, improved event is Ned Rifkin, curator of Contemporary Art for the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington.

Rifkin reviewed more than 270 submissions, then made 25 studio visits and selected 14 artists for the “Annuale.” And the winners are: Max Almy, Elizabeth Bryant, Diane Buckler, John Divola, Roy Dowell, Keith Downey, Connie Fitzsimmons, Laura Hayes, Kady Hoffman, Kay E. Koopman, Carolyn Krause, Bruce Meisner, Art Nomura and Marc Pally.

The “Annuale” opens Sept. 12 and continues through Oct. 19.

Roberto Delgado, an artist-in-residence at Self-Help Graphics and Art in East Los Angeles, has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for mural painting in Mexico. Delgado will take up residence for the 1986-87 academic year at the National University of Mexico’s Museo Universitario del Chopo.

A graduate of UCLA, Delgado has been associated with Self-Help Graphics for several years. His primary activity within the nonprofit arts organization has been to extend its programs to include artists and art professionals from Mexico.

During his stay in Mexico, Delgado will be painting murals at Technical High School No. 25 in Mexico City and at the Casa de la Cultural in Yajalon, in the state of Chiapas.

“Miro In Montreal” will be at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts through Oct. 5. This exhibition of the European master’s works consists of 99 sculptures, 75 works on paper and a tapestry drawn from the collections of the Maeght Foundation in France.

Joan Miro was born in 1893 and died in 1983. Primarily a painter during his early years, Miro later developed a strong interest in sculpture.

Between 1962 and 1974, he created some 225 sculptures in bronze and ceramic, the majority of which were cast for the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul de Vence. The Montreal show marks the first time the sculpture has crossed the Atlantic.

Tickets for the exhibition may be obtained through Ticketron outlets or charged by telephone through Teletron. Group tickets must be secured by writing: Group Tickets-Miro, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 3400 Avenue du Musee, Montreal, Quebec, Canada H3G 1K3.
