A 20-year-old woman drowned in the Pacific Ocean off Newport Beach near Coronado Street about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, despite attempts by friends to revive her after they dragged her to shore.

Coroner’s officials said the woman, Jeanne Veenstra of Newport Beach, was later taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, where she was formally pronounced dead.

Officials said that the woman and several friends were wading in the ocean when the woman was unexpectedly knocked over by a large wave.

The friends dragged her to shore, attempted to pump her lungs and gave her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Paramedics also attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful, officials said.

No lifeguards were on duty at that hour, officials said.
