The Chicago City Council rejected a proposed homosexual rights ordinance after strong opposition from the Roman Catholic Church. The council voted 30 to 18 to table the measure, which would have barred discrimination in employment, housing and civil rights on the basis of “sexual orientation.” The existing city code prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color and religion. Supporters had packed the chamber gallery. An estimated 250 people demonstrated against the measure outside City Hall.
