Veteran offensive lineman Bill Bain, who spent 7 of his 11 years in the NFL with the Rams, has left the Kansas City Chiefs’ camp, apparently having decided to retire.

“He feels he gave it a great try,” Coach John Mackovic said. “We encouraged him to stay, but he feels this is the right thing to do. We hated to see him go.”

Bain, who will turn 34 Aug. 9, was waived by the Rams before the 1986 draft. He was claimed by another team but exercised his right to declare himself a free agent and signed with the Chiefs.

He had been working out at left tackle, a position Kansas City expects to be filled by No. 1 draft choice Brian Jozwiak, who remains unsigned.
