Rocks Legislation
This letter is in response to Joseph A. Strapac’s question (Letters, July 3); “Where were the lobbyists of the auto clubs . . . when (the stop the rocks) issue came to a vote in committee in Sacramento?”
As the lobbyist for the Automobile Club of Southern California, I can assure you, Mr. Strapac, that we were there. For more than a year, my colleagues at the California State Automobile Assn. and I have worked diligently with Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sepulveda) in an attempt to ensure passage of AB 2335.
We have spoken individually with a number of legislators, expressing the danger and costs to motorists that result from flying sand, gravel, and rocks. In addition we have testified in committees where the bill has been heard (including the Senate Transportation Committee) and served as an information source for Katz on this question.
Outside the Sacramento arena, the Automobile Club has, through its district offices, distributed thousands of motorist alerts, informing our members of the provisions of AB 2335 and encouraging them to write their legislators in support of the bill. On this issue and all others affecting motorists, the club continues its tradition of representing the interests of the driving public on both the state and local levels.
