Local News in Brief : CSUN to Offer Honors Program for Achievers
A new honors program in general education for high-achieving students will begin this fall at California State University, Northridge, a campus official announced.
The program will offer four lower-division and two upper-division courses in such topics as American history, speech communications, religion and critical reasoning, said John Hartzog, director of CSUN’s Learning Resource Center.
About 150 students will be admitted to the honors program, which was patterned after a smaller experimental program in operation for four years, Hartzog said.
Although there are several honors programs in specialized fields, none is designed for general-education study, Hartzog said.
To qualify for entrance into what is being called the University Honors Program in General Education, first-year students will be required to have a 3.7 grade-point average in high school or a Scholastic Aptitude Test score of 1050 or above. High school faculty recommendations will also be taken into consideration, Hartzog said.
Continuing students at CSUN must have an overall grade-point average of at least 3.5 to be admitted to the program.
