U.S. Pledges New Drought Aid
Agriculture Secretary Richard E. Lyng promised new aid today for Southern farmers hit by the worst drought in a century, saying the government will split the cost of their feed purchases and send surplus grain to the stricken area.
The Administration relief program will accompany an ongoing volunteer haylift, in which farmers in a number of other states have supplied free hay to their drought-stricken fellow farmers. House Agriculture Committee Chairman E. (Kika) de la Garza (D-Tex.) described the federal aid package as “helpful,” but criticized the Administration for doing too little too late.
