Huntington Beach : Owens Given Farrell’s Old Job at Golden West

Fred Owens, former dean of arts, communications and sciences, has been named new dean of administrative services at Golden West College.

Owens, 58, of Costa Mesa, succeeds Gene Farrell, who recently moved to Orange Coast College to become dean of administrative services there.

Owens has been with Golden West College since it opened in 1966. He served as division chairman for physical education and recreation and as the college’s first athletic director until 1978, when he was appointed as a dean.

Owens played football on Marine Corp teams during his years of military service, 1945-49, and he was twice named to the Fleet Marine Force All Stars. He holds a doctorate in education from Brigham Young University. The Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce named him its “Man of the Year” in 1985, and he is a founder and current executive chairman of the Orange County Chapter of the March of Dimes Defects Foundation.
