Guatemala, Britain Will Resume Diplomatic Links

GUATEMALA CITY —
President Vinicio Cerezo announced that Guatemala and Britain will reopen diplomatic ties, ending a 24-year break in relations. He said Thursday that the two countries will open consular offices Aug. 15.
In 1962, Guatemala’s military ruler, Gen. Miguel Ydigorous Fuentes, broke ties with Britain over claims to Belize, then a colony known as British Honduras. Belize gained its independence from Britain in 1981.
