Lockheed Joins Team for Space Station Bid

Calabasas-based Lockheed has joined a team headed by the Rocketdyne division of Rockwell International to bid on a $1-billion contract for the electrical system for the NASA manned space station scheduled to begin orbiting Earth in the mid-1990s.

Lockheed’s Missiles & Space Co. division in Sunnyvale would help design and build the solar energy system. Other contractors on the Rocketdyne team include Ford Aerospace & Communications, Garrett Corp., Harris Corp. and Sundstrand Corp. Bids for the contract are due in early January.

Canoga Park-based Rocketdyne and TRW’s Federal Systems division in Redondo Beach were selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in April, 1985, to head groups to bid for the contract for the electrical system. TRW, however, withdrew from the project in May, and NASA is soliciting bids from other prospective prime contractors.
