The defense rested Monday in the pipe-bombing murder trial of Steven Wayne Benson, 35, who wept when a golfer told about trying to rescue tobacco heiress Margaret Benson from the family’s burning van.

Lawyer Michael McDonnell rested the defense case after the testimony of golfer Ralph Merrill, the 22nd witness for the defense.

Benson, who is charged with the first-degree murder of his mother, Margaret Benson, 63, and nephew, Scott Benson, 21, on July 9, 1985, did not testify.
