Workshop on Trash Plant Scrubbed

A workshop on SANDER, the garbage-to-energy plant proposed for Kearny Mesa, has been canceled, according to the California Energy Commission, which is reviewing the plan. The workshop had been scheduled for Thursday morning in Kearny Mesa.

However, the commission still intends to hold the separate evening workshop on SANDER scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Al-Bahr Shrine Temple in Kearny Mesa. The purpose of the workshop is to consider alternatives to the controversial plant.

Claudia Barker, a commission spokeswoman, said Tuesday that the daytime session was scotched after Signal Environmental Systems, the firm hoping to build the plant, said it had no issues to raise at the meeting. The meeting was to have been an opportunity for Signal to question the commission about its requests for data.

The evening session is to be held in the auditorium at 5440 Kearny Mesa Road. The proposed plant would be built nearby, on a corner of the Miramar landfill near the intersection of California 163 and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.
