Another 100 cases of AIDS were reported in San Francisco last month, health officials said. The number of cases transmitted through heterosexual contact more than doubled in the city in the past six months, as did the number of cases among drug addicts. “The data, again, show that transmission of AIDS is not limited to any group,” said San Francisco Health Director Dr. David Werdegar. However, more than 96% of the 2,250 AIDS patients reported in San Francisco since 1981 have been gay men. “It could spread like wildfire if we don’t take measures now,” said Dr. Dean Echenberg, director of the city’s Bureau of Communicable Diseases.
