UPI Beefs Up Bureaus in U.S. and Overseas
United Press International on Wednesday announced the addition of 37 editorial positions, the reopening of five domestic bureaus and the establishment of a new bureau in the Middle East.
Editor-in-Chief Maxwell McCrohon said the positions were authorized by UPI Chairman and Chief Executive Mario Vazquez Rana, who has said that adding editorial staff and increasing UPI’s news coverage would be a priority for the company under his leadership.
Bureaus will be reopened in Dayton, Akron and Youngstown, Ohio; in Charlotte, N.C., and in Roanoke, Va. A new bureau will be opened in Bahrain to increase UPI’s news coverage from the Persian Gulf, McCrohon said.
McCrohon said the staff will include reporters assigned to such areas as business, sports and broadcast news as well as to state coverage and international reporting.
States receiving increased staff are Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, Florida, New Jersey, Illinois, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia and Indiana, as well as Washington, D.C.
In addition to the new bureau in Bahrain, UPI also will add correspondents in Africa, Nicaragua and Honduras.
“This expansion is a strong sign of commitment to UPI’s news report,” McCrohon said. “We have begun to add staff in a strategic manner to meet longstanding news needs and offer better service to our subscribers.”
McCrohon said that the staff increases and bureau openings should be completed by the middle of September and that further staff increases will be announced shortly.
