I’ve read some pretty disgusting stuff in my time, but the letter from John Bunzel really takes the cake! I quote some of his words used to describe Bob Hope’s joke to a closed audience of 360 people: “tasteless, offensive, more than obscene, abusive, unworthy, profane, insensitivity, sad, shameful, besmirch, vulgarity, morally crude, and indecent.”

Sounds awful, doesn’t it? But Bunzel repeats the joke in its entirely for The Times to publish for millions of hapless readers.

In other words, Bunzel has magnified the alleged wrong by a factor of millions!

In reality, the subject joke is a good, clean joke! It’s about AIDS, a serious matter today, subject to and in need of good American humor.
