The Private Industry Council Hire-a-Youth program has achieved half of its summer goal by placing 3,196 youths of all economic backgrounds in summer jobs in San Diego County.
In its fourth year and bolstered by the promotional backing of San Diego Charger Lionel James and San Diego Padre Tony Gwynn, Hire-a-Youth plans to place 6,000 youths in jobs by Sept. 30. The youths, ages 16 to 21, work as landscapers, construction workers, drivers, typists, clerks and maintenance workers.
This year, the council provided buses to transport kids to and from work and interviews, and placements are up 38% over this time last year. “We’re confident that we are going to meet our goal of 6,000,” said Denise Prantner, marketing representative for the council.
The council is a 21-member board of business and community leaders that administers federal job training funds. It was controlled by a public agency until 1982.
