Irvine’s Freeway Policy

Before we become too amused by the ranting and posturing of Irvine Mayor Larry Agran, we might consider that it is not only Irvine that loses if this reactionary mayor wins. Already clogged traffic arteries virtually ensure that some present freeways must be widened and that probably more will have to be built.

Eight other cities appear to know that lack of coordinated planning and delays will not lessen the problem or financial impact and are trying to work together. Only a Brigadoon mentality would assume that a “conservative” no-growth policy in one city would cure present traffic ills, let alone those coming.

Irvine is itself a commuter community, the major contributor in the last five years to county population growth and one of the few cities that has not been suggested for a new freeway segment..

If the saner heads in the community cannot restrain Agran’s silly limelight maneuvers, then I suggest the next time this yuppie heaven wants to secede from the county, we grab the opportunity first and then bill them for every auxiliary service they require. (Anyone for toll roads?)
