Tests were ordered after 57 courier service workers who had handled cargo sprayed with an insecticide became ill in Burlingame, 20 miles south of San Francisco. Assistant Fire Chief Ken Musso said employees of the DHL Worldwide Courier Express facility were hospitalized after complaining of nausea, dizziness, headaches and vomiting. Workers complained of a strong odor of garlic from 40 to 50 boxes shipped from a DHL plane at San Francisco International Airport. San Francisco police investigators believe the problem may have been caused by leather belts from Italy sprayed with the insecticide arsenical.
