USTA Boys’ 12 Tennis Tournament : Boich, Spadea Reach the Finals in Doubles After 3-Hour Win
Wayne Boich and Vincent Spadea defeated Joseph Carneley and Jon Goldfarb Saturday in a doubles semifinal match in the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 12 Tennis Tournament at Morley Field.
Boich and Spadea took almost three hours to beat Carneley and Goldfarb, 6-3, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-1). All four players are from Florida.
In the other doubles semifinal, the third-seeded team of Jeffrey Giraldo of Grosse Pointe, Mich., and Jeff Salzenstein of Englewood, Colo., defeated Brian Dunn of Brandon, Fla., and Court Gettel of Tucson, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Dunn and Gettel, seeded sixth, beat Brian Dabsha and Damon Henkel Friday.
The doubles final will follow the 11:30 a.m. singles final that also features Salzenstein. Seeded fourth in singles, Salzenstein defeated seventh-seeded Chris Devore of Decatur, Ill., Saturday, 6-0, 6-2.
Salzenstein will play Dunn, who rallied to defeat Eddie Schwartz of Riverwoods, Ill., in the other semifinal. Numerous forced errors by Schwartz aided Dunn in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
