The Rush to Welcome Fall Social Whirl

They’re just making sure--all of them--before they bask in August sun, without guilt, that everyone knows about some biggies in the fall. Thus, there’s a rash of panicky “Hold that date,” “Save that date” notes and memos. Of course.

James Gamble, Lee DuBridge, Adelaide Hixon, Andrea Van de Kamp, Barbara Martyn and Robert Swain are alerting us to Sept. 29, when “Looking Toward Tomorrow . . . The Second Century” gets a motivational push in the Pasadena City Hall courtyard for the YMCA/YWCA new building project dinner-dance celebration.

“A Calling of the Pipes” is a hold-the-date for Oct. 25, when the Los Angeles Master Chorale will officially introduce John Currie from Edinburgh, the rather new music director of the chorale. Andre Previn is honorary chairman. And pipes, a Scottish-themed dinner and big band dancing are promised in the newly renovated and romantic Crystal Ballroom of the Biltmore.

Then, gala co-chairmen Doris Fields Heller and Belle Owens advise saving Dec. 4 for “Evening With Peter Duchin” in the Century Plaza Tower, the 10th anniversary Christmas gala for the Los Angeles Pops Orchestra. It’s planned by the Keynote 88 Committee and Mrs. John I. Moore, chairman.

And one more. Elizabeth Duque Hotaling, about to move into her newly renovated house with husband, Dick, has sent handwritten notes about the Junior League of Los Angeles’ seventh annual Los Angeles Antiques Show on Nov. 6-9 at the Biltmore Hotel. Bitsy Hotaling, chairman of the sponsors, benefactors and patrons committee, is giving plenty of leeway to the big givers. One can be a grand sponsor at $3,500, a sponsor for $2,000, a benefactor for $1,000 or a patron for a donation of $500. The bigger the gift, the more the perks; nevertheless, all are assured two tickets to the preview party Nov. 5, and the three top categories will be invited to the gala Nov. 7 with dinner and dancing in the Crystal Ballroom.

But right now there’s a lot of fun, too.

The Diamond Circle for the City of Hope, sponsors of “The Last Great Hollywood Party,” installs new president David Marmel at a festive dinner next Sunday at the Regency Club. He’s the TV producer of the Mrs. America Pageant, also the Victor Awards (for sports). Wife, Elaine, is equally active in City of Hope. She’s chaired the three-day luncheon of the Sportsmen’s Club.

Vista del Mar Junior Associates host their annual membership luncheon Saturday featuring a fashion show by Ann Taylor at Riviera Country Club, according to luncheon chairman Lori Wolf. The juniors, all under age 35, conduct on-grounds classes and sponsor community outings for children at Vista del Mar.

New French Trade Commissioner Alain Galliano is being welcomed Thursday at a patio breakfast at the Galliano home in Westwood, where he’ll announce his first major local project, “French Impressions ’86 . . . ,” an exposition of French fashions and home furnishings to be held Oct. 30-Nov. 2 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in cooperation with the French Ministry of Foreign Trade. “The West Coast life style provides the perfect marketing arena for both French fashion and home designs,” the commissioner said.

Barbra Streisand is honorary chairman for the American Friends of the Hebrew University’s Biennial Conference on Sept. 17-21, based at the Century Plaza. A few of the plans: lunch at Pickfair and Jerry Weintraub’s Blue Heaven home in Malibu; performances by Tony Bennett, Roberta Peters, Paul Anka, Dick Shawn and Jan Murray.

Con Brio, the Pasadena Chamber Orchestra’s busy support group, is asking friends to come dressed for croquet for its “Edwardian Afternoon in the Country,” Sept. 14. The setting will be the pretty gardens at the San Marino home of USC President James Zumberge and his wife, Marilyn. Vicki Livingstone is chairman. Tink Cheney and Giny Marum are overseeing entertainment, horseshoes and badminton, serenades by the orchestra, and late-afternoon dancing. Judy Kelly and Kaholyn McKissick are handling invitations; Lill Causey, reservations; Hildegard Lindsay, Barbara Hoover and Linda Talbot, the elegant basket suppers and wine from caterers Sue Campoy of Julienne, Dannis Brown and David Chaparro of Two’s Company, Peggy Dart of Exploring Foods and Ellen Roth and Robert Jenkins of Happy Trails. Two Southern Californians--C.C. Beaudette and David Valentine--were among those at the royal wedding of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, now the Duke and Duchess of York, and their assigned places in Westminster Abbey were down in front with all the lords and ladies. That’s why the rush of local “tell us all about it” festivities. C.C.’s mother, Mrs. Palmer Beaudette, is returning from Hawaii, where she and Hope Hearst have been for a month, to gather family and friends at her Solvang home to view photos. David’s mother, Donna Adams, has a similar fete planned in her Eagle Rock garden, and Jo and Tom Bowen are entertaining at brunch in Westwood. Another hostess will be Cathy Damus of Sherman Oaks, showing a video she made of the ceremony. C.C. (a.k.a. Cobina Carolyn) has been a friend of the Duke of York since she was a schoolgirl in England. David and the Duke of York struck up a friendship because both fly helicopters. Harriet Weaver Vasque tells us her cousin David and C.C. were luncheon guests of Lord and Lady Montaguin the House of Lords after the marriage. Later, the duo attended a reception at Claridge’s, where they bumped into Angelenos Kay Brown, Webster Phillips, Vladimir and Anne Volokh and Kay’s niece, Christine Sexton of San Jose (Auntie Kay gave Chris the trip as a high school graduation gift). That group had stopped off in London for a black-tie affair given by Lady Killean and a look-see at the Royal wedding procession, before leaving for Scotland to be guests at the nuptials of Katrina Monroe and Tom McIntyre and to attend Sir Fitzroy and Lady Maclean’s summer gala.
