Severe overcrowding at San Diego County’s six jails has prompted a court order allowing the immediate release of some inmates arrested for investigation of minor crimes. The order, which will remain in force until Sept. 5, came after the inmate population of the jails climbed to 3,141, about 80% above the facilities’ rated capacity. Authorities attributed the increase to recently published guidelines by the state attorney general’s office saying misdemeanor offenders should remain in custody until they post bail or appear before a judge.
