Polish Ship Captain Blames Wind for Delay
The captain of the Polish sailing ship Stomil, which was four days late for the Fourth of July celebration in New York and missed a Chicago appearance last week, said the single-masted vessel was delayed because of weak winds on the Great Lakes.
The 38-foot Stomil left Cheboygan, Mich., Thursday morning with a crew of eight and was to dock in Chicago on Friday, said Coast Guard Lt. Maureen Hawkins.
The Coast Guard, unable to reach the ship by radio Friday, issued an urgent marine information broadcast, Hawkins said. Just as a Coast Guard jet was preparing to take off from Cape Cod, Mass., Saturday morning to search for the Stomil, it appeared off Navy Pier.
“It’s taken us a lot of time because there was no wind,” said Barbara Gayewska, 38, captain of the ship.
