Covered by a blue tarp to hide its keel, the 12-meter America’s Cup challenger USA left San Francisco for Australia aboard a freighter. The USA will attempt to win back for America the most treasured trophy in yachting.

The gleaming high-tech hull was hoisted aboard the freighter Nedlloyd Kingston for the 3 1/2-week trip. Arrival is expected Sept. 4.

Chicago’s entry, Heart of America, was also loaded aboard for the trip.

Trials that could include as many as 14 boats from six nations will be held off Fremantle, starting Oct. 5, for a chance to race the Royal Perth Yacht Club for the Cup in January.

The USA represents a $10-million effort by San Francisco’s St. Francis Yacht Club. It’s believed to sport a winged keel, something like the breakthrough keel that helped speed Perth’s Australia II to victory over the New York Yacht Club in 1983.
