A member of the grand jury that investigated the death of Len Bias, Maryland basketball All-American, said: “The team as a whole looks pretty clean.”

The juror, who asked not to be identified, said that “a lot of this stuff” about drug use by university athletes has been blown out of proportion.

The comments were made after the grand jury had spent the entire day listening to testimony from six of Bias’ teammates. Bias died of cocaine intoxication in his dormitory room June 19, two days after he was selected by the Boston Celtics as the second player in the NBA draft.

Several grand jury members said they had heard from all six basketball players, but neither the jurors nor the players would comment on what the players talked about during their testimony.

Those testifying Monday were Tony Massenburg, Tom (Speedy) Jones, Gregg Nared, Bryan Palmer, Derrick Lewis and John Johnson. All were Bias’ teammates last season.
