An 88-year-old derelict, who had about $80,000 in cash and 28 bank passbooks sewn into his clothing, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital as an indigent after collapsing in the street. He was reported in fair condition after surgery to relieve an accumulation of blood inside the skull. Medical staffers discovered the money and bank books as they worked to revive the man, later identified as Chester Louie, who they said was suffering either from a stroke or from a blow on the head. A hospital spokesman said the bankbooks were all in different names, but were tied to the elderly man by various Chinatown contacts.
