Tennis Roundup : Top Players Advance in Canadian

Yannick Noah, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker and defending champion John McEnroe posted easy victories Wednesday in the second round of the $375,000 Canadian Open at Toronto.

Becker disposed of Aaron Krickstein, 6-2, 6-1, in a match that lasted only 48 minutes.

Lendl, the top-seeded player from Czechoslovakia, was pressed before posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Greg Holmes.

McEnroe, playing only his second tournament since his tennis sabbatical began in February, advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Todd Nelson, ranked 62nd in the world.

Noah, playing his first tournament in two months, beat South African Danie Visser, 6-4, 6-4. He withdrew from the French Open and missed Wimbledon because of an injured Achilles’ tendon.

In an upset, Sammy Giammalva of Houston, ranked 107th on the Assn. of Tennis Professionals computer, beat sixth-seeded Tim Mayotte of Springfield, Mass., 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Jimmy Connors, ranked No. 5 in the world, beat Tim Gullikson, 6-2, 7-6, 7-4, in a first-round match of an invitational tournament at Stowe, Vt.
