Merchants in San Francisco’s Chinatown have donated $10,000 to build a koban-- a Japanese-style neighborhood police booth. The koban will have lockable wheels so it can be moved easily. Police Lt. Thomas W. Suttmeier said the booth will “help create a climate where police are part of the community in Chinatown.” Suttmeier said the koban will be staffed by police officers, police reserves or public-spirited citizens, equipped with portable radios and cellular telephones.
