Violence broke out after a brief court appearance in the Irish Republic by a Protestant member of Parliament from Northern Ireland accused of attacking Irish police officers during a cross-border raid last week. A small group of Protestants who accompanied lawmaker Peter Robinson from Northern Ireland scuffled with Roman Catholics outside the Dundalk District Court. Minutes later, about 100 Protestants were pelted with stones, bottles and gasoline bombs by several hundred local youths as they tried to get to their cars. Several injuries were reported. Robinson was ordered to return to court Oct. 2 and was allowed to remain free on bail of $14,740.
