World chess champion Gary Kasparov won the eighth game of his title match with fellow Soviet grandmaster Anatoly Karpov on Friday when the challenger ran out of time with 10 moves still to make. Kasparov now leads with 4 1/2 points to 3 1/2 for Karpov.

Each player has 2 1/2 hours to make 40 moves, and both used most of their time to get to Move 20.

Karpov found himself with only one minute for his last 11 moves in the tactical struggle. Kasparov, who had four minutes left, continued to play for complicated positions, and Karpov ran out of time.

Kasparov opened the game with the same moves Karpov had played against him in the previous game.

On his fifth move, Karpov, with the black pieces, played a different continuation, and after 10 moves experts said Kasparov had a slight advantage.

The first 12 games of the 24-game match are being played in London, the remainder will be played in Leningrad. The winner will be the first player to score six victories or 12 1/2 points. In the event of a 12-12 tie, Kasparov remains champion.
