Efforts were under way to eradicate crop-destroying fruit flies discovered in Orange County, the first known appearance of the species in the Western Hemisphere.
The three guava fruit flies, native to India and Asia, were found earlier this month in traps in Garden Grove, Westminster and unincorporated Midway City.
State entomologists hope a sticky paste on trees, utility poles and fence posts in a 16-square-mile area of central Orange County will lure male guava flies to kill them before they reproduce. That method “is safe for the public, unobtrusive and effective,” said Gera Curry, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Food and Agriculture.
