Church to Take Over Lease on Closed Canoga Park School

A Canoga park church received permission from the Los Angeles school board this week to lease an empty Canoga Park elementary school and reopen the campus for kindergarten through 12th grades.

West Valley Christian Church plans to open Haynes Street Elementary School in September as West Valley Christian Schools. The church operates a preschool at its Canoga Park sanctuary.

The school will have about 400 students, with tuition ranging from $1,560 to $1,800 a year.

The Los Angeles Unified School District closed Haynes in 1982 because of low enrollment. In 1984, the Armenian General Benevolent Union leased the school for five years and opened its own private school. Last year, however, the Armenians purchased Highlander Road Elementary School, another low-enrollment Canoga Park school the district closed in the early 1980s.

Earlier this year, the Armenian group asked to be released from its lease agreement for Haynes so it could move its students and faculty to the new campus. West Valley Christian Church will complete the remaining three years of the lease with the option to renew it for five years.
