El Monte : Water Hook-Up Denied

Share

The city of El Monte has denied a permit for water service to Public Storage Inc. in the latest round of a long-running dispute over construction of a self-storage facility on a three-acre site south of Lower Azusa Road near the San Gabriel River in Arcadia. The denial came after the El Monte City Council passed an urgency ordinance declaring a moratorium on the issuance of utility permits for property that would not be connected to a public sewer system.

El Monte has denied Public Storage permission to connect to the city sewer system on the grounds that the facility, in an industrial zone in a tip of Arcadia, would have a negative effect on the neighboring residential area in El Monte. Public Storage officials have said they may file suit against El Monte in an effort to overturn the ordinance.

El Monte has been fighting any effort to develop the site for any use other than residential. The city is appealing a ruling in May by a Superior Court judge that there was no evidence the project would have a detrimental effect on the environment.
