Downey : Redevelopment Committee

Share

After two long meetings spent enlisting prospective members for a redevelopment advisory committee, about 75 nominees will meet again tonight in hopes of forming a provisional committee.

The Project Area Committee will advise the City Council on a 305-acre redevelopment project along Firestone Boulevard.

State law requires that a group be formed by Sept. 14, or 60 days from July 16, when the Planning Commission approved the project boundaries.

At last week’s meeting, which was presided over by a temporary chairman, residents broke off into groups of residential and business property owners, business owners, tenants and community service organizations who will be affected by the project, according to Delores Bacus, who owns a flower shop in the area.

“We are going to stay in that room until we have a PAC,” Bacus said, referring to tonight’s meeting. “Hopefully we will appoint a chairman so we can be represented at the City Council meetings.”

According to Bacus, the group plans to go before the council to request its own legal counsel.
