The record-breaking heat that scorched San Diego County earlier this week moderated Wednesday, but above-normal temperatures were forecast to continue at least until the weekend.

High temperatures were forecast to fall a few degrees today at the beach, where hazy sunshine and daytime highs in the 70s were predicted with light west to southwest sea breezes 10 to 18 m.p.h.

The water temperature, which is below average for this time of year, hovers at 67 degrees.

Forecasters said coastal highs probably won’t top 80, and lows should drop below the balmy nighttime temperature of 70 recorded at Lindbergh Field on Wednesday night.

National Weather Service forecaster Harvey Hastrup said the high-pressure system over the Southwest will continue to foster warm weather.

“I think we will continue a very, very, slow cooling trend for the next couple of days, but temperatures will still be above normal,” he said.

Hot, sunny, days were forecast to continue inland, with highs in the 90- to 102-degree range through Friday.

A chance of afternoon and evening thundershowers continues in the mountains and deserts, but otherwise fair skies are expected.

Temperatures may reach the 80s again in the mountains, with lows from 55 to 65 degrees. Desert highs are expected to be in the 104- to 111-degree range, with lows in the high 70s to high 80s.
