Czechs’ Hop Fields Damaged by Hail

VIENNA —
Hailstorms have inflicted heavy damage on hop fields in western Czechoslovakia, home of the some of the world’s best beers, the country’s official news agency Ceteka said Wednesday.
The hail in north and central Bohemia on Monday was followed by rains that flooded hop fields with water and mud, wiping out hopes of a relatively good harvest.
Czechoslovakia is the world’s fourth largest producer of hops with 29,500 acres sown to the crop, and connoisseurs rank the Pilsner Urquell and Budvar brews among the finest.
