Bartkowski Misses First Ram Practice

A pulled abdominal muscle Wednesday forced quarterback Steve Bartkowski to miss his first practice since joining the Rams.

Bartkowski, who completed 11 of 15 passes for 2 touchdowns in Monday night’s exhibition victory over the San Francisco 49ers, reported back to practice, but after a few minutes removed his helmet, jersey and shoulder pads and watched the rest.

“It was sorer than I thought,” Bartkowski said, rubbing his abdomen. “I’ve got a pulled muscle that’s bothered me for a couple of weeks, so (Coach) John (Robinson) told me to take the day off to try to get it well.”

Asked if he would be able to play against the San Diego Chargers at Anaheim Saturday night, Bartkowski said: “I think it’ll be fine. I’ve played through a whole lot worse than that.”

He has had surgery five times on his right knee.

Robinson said: “He’ll be back tomorrow (or) the next day at the latest.”

Without Bartkowski, the Rams are down to two healthy quarterbacks: Steve Dils and Scott Tinsley.

Dieter Brock, who injured a knee against Houston Aug. 5, returned to practice without pads Wednesday but spent most of the day throwing short passes to punter Dale Hatcher. He isn’t expected to be ready to play for another month.
