Musician David Crosby has won permission to transfer to the Los Angeles area three years of parole on a Texas drug and weapon conviction for which he spent about nine months in prison.

“We received the papers from California authorizing our release to them of David Crosby,” Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles spokesman Mike Roach said today. “He’ll be leaving Houston some time today for California.”

Crosby, 45, has been in a Houston halfway house since leaving a state prison unit Aug. 8. He performed Thursday night at a club with musician Graham Nash. Both men were members of the former rock group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

As part of his parole, Crosby will undergo periodic drug testing. But Crosby maintains that he is now free of the drug habit that plagued him more than 10 years.

Crosby requested permission to serve his parole time near Los Angeles because he wants to live with relatives and work in the area.
