Wrong Impression on Rock Supplier

Iwould like to correct an erroneous statement which appeared in an article titled “Little Craters Turn Into Big Problem on 2 Freeways” (July 29).
Caltrans spokesman Gene Berthelsen is quoted as saying, “Caltrans engineers have traced the problem to unusually acidic rock or aggregate, from P. W. Gillibrand Co.’s gravel pit in Simi Valley.”
P. W. Gillibrand Co. should not have been singled out. Caltrans staff acted too quickly in naming P. W. Gillibrand Co. as the supplier of the reactive aggregate which caused problems on the Simi Valley and Ventura freeways. A more thorough investigation revealed that Caltrans also used numerous other aggregate suppliers, and P. W. Gillibrand Co. should not have been identified as the only supplier in this instance.
