An expansion and architectural face lift for Peninsula Center, the Palos Verdes Peninsula’s oldest shopping center, has been approved by the Planning Commission and will go to the City Council for final approval Tuesday.

Plans call for building exteriors to be replaced with Mediterranean-style facades, using earth-tone colors and arcades with Moorish columns. New signs also will be put up. Planted medians and other landscaping will be added to the 1,520-space parking lot. Four new buildings, totaling 21,500 square feet in retail space, will be built.

“The center is 25 years old and is due for a face lift,” said manager Richard Funke. Located at Hawthorne Boulevard and Silver Spur Road, the center was purchased a year ago by Sierra Real Estate Equity Trust 84, a San Francisco investment group.

Funke said the project will cost about $5 million. A start date had not been determined, he said.
