Laufenberg Is Cut Loose by Redskins

The Washington Redskins on Tuesday released 10 players, including former Crespi High and Pierce College quarterback Babe Laufenberg.

It was the second time the popular Laufenberg had been released by the Redskins, who cut him a year ago but signed him again as a backup to quarterback Jay Schroeder. The cuts enabled Washington to meet the National Football League limit of 50 players.

Laufenberg completed 13 of 20 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown as he engineered the Redskins’ 27-24, come-from-behind overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers two weeks ago. The bearded quarterback, who had been the darling of a “Save the Babe” campaign by Redskins fans, said there is a chance he will wear another team’s jersey this season.

“I’ll tool on home and see what happens,” he said. “There’s been some teams interested and a little bit of conversation, so we’ll see what develops in that regard.”

Laufenberg departed without hard feelings.

“I think you’re not only judged by how you enter but how you exit, and this is certainly an exit,” he told WUSA-TV. “I don’t think it’ll do any good to bad-mouth anybody.”

Laufenberg, who earned All-American and All-Southern Section honors as a senior at Crespi in 1977, holds the school career passing record of 2,678 yards and 184 completions. He attended four colleges--Stanford, Missouri, Pierce and Indiana--before being drafted in the sixth round by Washington in 1983.
