Lenny Mattiace of Wake Forest appeared to secure medalist honors Wednesday for the 86th U.S. Amateur Golf Championship before rain interrupted the tournament for the second straight day.

Mattiace has a score of 71-66--137, and held off a challenge by teammate Tim Straub, who is second at 70-68--138.

A late-afternoon thunderstorm forced postponement of play with 47 golfers on the courses at the Country Club of Birmingham and Shoal Creek, which are being used for qualifying.
