Santa Monica District OKs Quake Plan
A comprehensive earthquake awareness and preparedness program was approved Monday by the Santa Monica-Malibu Board of Education.
In response to growing community concerns about the possibility of a major earthquake in Southern California, the board unanimously accepted all of the recommendations made by its quake crisis committee.
They include workshops for parents and principals, a detailed procedure for releasing students to guardians after an earthquake, survival packets for students, drafting of an evacuation plan and updating of emergency equipment and supplies.
A proposal to hire a structural engineer to inspect school buildings, rather than having school personnel do the job, was rejected by the committee, which argued that hiring the engineer would cost the financially troubled district more than $44,000.
According to the committee report, the school district will spend $2,780 on the program in 1986-87 and will rely heavily on private donations and existing supplies and manpower.
