“Into the Woods,” a musical collaboration by the Pulitzer Prize-winning team of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, will open the Old Globe Theatre’s winter season Dec. 4, Tom Hall, managing director of the Globe, announced Thursday.

Composed by Sondheim and written and directed by Lapine, “Into the Woods” is based on characters from Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

Sondheim and Lapine won a Pulitzer Prize for the musical “Sunday in the Park With George.” In 1985, they and writer George Furth revised the musical “Merrily We Roll Along” which was produced by the La Jolla Playhouse.
