Sentencing of Meier Delayed for More Mental Tests

The sentencing of Torran Lee Meier, convicted of killing his mother and attempting to kill his half brother, was postponed Thursday to allow further psychological testing of the youth.

Van Nuys Superior Court Judge George Xanthos ordered the California Youth Authority to conduct a 90-day study to determine if Meier, 17, of Canoga Park is suitable for rehabilitative treatment through the CYA.

The study, which is not binding, is to be completed by Nov. 26, at which time Xanthos will sentence Meier. He faces a maximum of 13 years in state prison for the October strangulation of his mother and the attempt to poison and burn his 8-year-old half brother.

A jury in June convicted Meier of voluntary manslaughter, attempted voluntary manslaughter and two counts of conspiracy to commit voluntary manslaughter.
